Santa Anita Sunday; Cost $7.50; June 19, 2022, by Richard Eng, author of Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies
Post Time 1 p.m. PT (closing day)
Race 1–6 ½ furlongs, Purse $67,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
6 Donnor Lake – His last 3 races were at Del Mar in 2021, suspect he faced much tougher foes than he will face tonight
9 Queen’s Code –He did everything but win last time in a strong effort, it was his first race in one year so will he bounce?
Long Shot– 2 Fore Flag
Race 2–1 mile, Purse $39,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
6 Poseidon’s Kid – This bugboy is as green as brand new artificial turf, this is the right kind of horse for him a speedball
1 Hotrod Ride – Like the rail draw in this 2-turn main track mile, suspect Drayden Van Dyke can sit a trip n hope to win late
Long Shot– 3 Bag’s Gold
Race 3–1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $69,000, Optional claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Queen Of the Temple – She gets major class relief from the grade 3 Santa Barbara for this condition allowance
2 Barrister’s Ride – Has won two turf routes in a row albeit facing much easier than today, will get tested for class tonight
Long Shot– 5 Ever Smart
Race 4–5 furlongs, Purse $67,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
1 Indict the Tiger – Exits a bullet workout for this, his debut was better than looked, flashed early speed from a wide post
5 Krixus Flash – Big run last time at 60/1 odds to end up second, if he can improve one step he could be dangerous
Long Shot– 4 Whobeterthantiger
Race 5–1 ¼ miles (turf), $100,000 Possibly Perfect, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Neige Blanche – She is the best distaff turf horse in SoCal, if the purse were larger Chad Brown would be here
7 Keyflower – If you believe in the longer half of an uncoupled entry wins a lot of the time, you’ll have to use this one also
Long Shot– 6 Scarabea
Race 6–5 ½ furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Besame Mucho – Chuck Treece has not won a race this meet, but he claimed this one from Mark Glatt is ready to fire
9 Westphal – Are we to assume this horse is named after NBA great Paul Westphal, new horse in the Ruben Alvarado barn
Long Shot– 1 Eleniak
Race 7–1 ¾ miles (turf), $125,000 San Juan Capistrano, 3-year-olds and up
7 Modus Operandi – I’m a big fan of Brendan Walsh, if he ships out for this n hires Umberto Rispoli, that’s enough for me
5 Red King – This is among the best marathon turf horses in SoCal, he does not win a whole lot but he tries hard every time
Long Shot– 3 Avenue
Race 8–6 furlongs (turf), Purse $69,000, Optional claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Fast Buck – Has won two in a row for trainer Caesar Dealba, not sure why he takes off Edgar Payeras who rode him twice
2 Standing O – I’ll make a mind bet that this horse goes off a lower odds than its 10/1 morning line, exits a win for Philip D’Amato
Long Shot– 12 Goliad
Race 9–6 ½ furlongs, Purse $67,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
9 Hero Status – Lost last time to Hopper who next time out won a 3-year-old stakes here at Santa Anita, was a key race
10 Famous Star – Been knocking on the door for trainer John Sadler, he adds blinkers on for focus n maybe more early speed
Long Shot– 2 Patron d’Oro
Race 10–6 ½ furlongs (Hillside turf course), Purse $69,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 After Midnight – This is one fast filly that I expect J. J. Hernandez to put on the lead, especially a sprinter stretching out
7 Feathers – If the early pace gets too hot, Umberto Rispoli will be lurking mid-pack ready to pounce and take over late
Long Shot– 4 Speed Lane
Race 11–1 mile (turf), $100,000 American, 3-year-olds and up
2 Hong Kong Charlie – I guarantee there is no way he will go off at his 4/1 odds, Philip D’Amato can cap off a terrific meet
3 Vanzzy – Did everything but win in the San Francisco Mile last time, got the ground saving trip, angled out n just missed
Long Shot– 1 Ecrivain
Best Bet – 5 Neige Blanche (race 5)
Santa Anita Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 23/9/$45.00; Long Shots, 12/3/$46.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

SIMO POD – #9 Grape Nuts Warrior (3/1) in race 7 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a mythical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
